We can all feel it. Spring is right around the corner.  In the Kansas City area, the weather has been a bit unpredictable, to say the least.  We are all looking forward to the warmer weather, for trees to start growing leaves again and for the brown cesspool that is our backyard to turn green again.  As we all anticipate the coming of Spring, it’s a good time to spring into action for your business.

If you are a business owner and have exterior building signage, know that your signs have weathered a lot of atmospheric change this year – literally.  Now, is the perfect time to check your signs and see if they need a new look for the new season.

There are many reasons to update or replace your current signage and below are just a few:

  1. Poor visibility

Size issues

The United States Sign Council has a minimum letter height requirement.  Based on viewing distance, there are different regulations.  For example, the minimum required letter height is 4’ for 0-100 feet.

Visibility is key to a functional business sign.  Is your sign sized properly for the height it is placed at?  Is the font size clear and legible?

Placement

Is your sign placed in an awkward or hard to see spot? Are there vines (or weeds) growing on your sign?  Maybe your sign was installed too high or too low for passersby’s to even notice?

The location of your sign is imperative for your customers to find you.  Passersby, whether walking or riding in a vehicle, should be able to easily locate your business from their location.

  1. Old and outdated

Get with the times

Signage, like technology, has updated and changed over time.  Is your sign rusted, fading or just out of date?  A new sign will attract customers, update your look and enhance your store front appearance.

Many businesses are upgrading to illuminated and LED Signage because they are Green and more economical.  Electronic signage is brighter, uses less power, draws more attention, and creates a 24-hour presence with a modern appeal.

  1. Too complex

Keep it simple

It’s the old KISS method. Your business sign should be clear, simple and easy to read. The graphics should be simple and should complement your business’ theme.  In many cases, business owners can become a bit too creative and choose complex and highly detailed logos, fancy fonts and art work for their sign.  This can make their sign too busy and can cause a visual distraction.

  1. Damaged

Wear and tear

Exterior signage has a life span like anything else.  The weather, sun, rain/moisture, wind and temperature can affect the integrity of your sign.  Over time, the sun can fade your sign and extreme weather can damage your sign in many ways.

In addition, damage can be caused by human error.  Maybe someone backed into your street sign?  Or vandals got to your exterior signage? A damaged sign is not appealing to customers and a sign with a poor appearance can have the potential to turn away business.

  1. Establish your brand

Attract your target audience

Does your sign display your theme and brand?  When advertising for your business, the main objective is to attract customers and present your business’s brand in a distinctive and attention-grabbing way.  If your sign does not compliment your business theme and attract your target audience, you may want to consider redesigning your logo and/or storefront signage.
